TSC Mission and Vision
The Story Circle Philippines was founded January 2003. The website / forums now concentrate on development and learning for close-up magic performance art. The following is the group¡¦s mission and vision statement:
The Story Circle Philippines is a workgroup / study group for close-up magicians, illusionists and mentalists. We are a non-political, non-hierarchy based organization and it follows that we are not geared into showing-off skills and effects to other members and learners of the group. We believe that magic IS for the spectator ¡V our friends, families and colleagues and NOT for other magician's amusement.
TSC envisions that should the community grow, TSC members will be known for hospitality and that infectious enthusiasm for magic. Our gatherings will be popularly known for its non-intimidating atmosphere where everyone is happy to help out - pros, enthusiasts and hobbyists alike. Growing beside already known groups like FSM, IMC, MagFi (Magician's Foundation, Inc.) and IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians), TSC envisions helping rev the engine that will start the growth of magic industry in the Philippines. It would be known as a far-try but should any of the organizations mentioned above start a would-be Magic Castle in the Philippines, TSC will give its full support.
Notes on Exposures
The group's online discussions and weekly gatherings aim to improve on the following things: Performance and Delivery, Attitude and Etiquette, Handling and Presentation and Technical Aspects of effects. This group is all about sharing - your experience, your performance tips and your effects. Yes, we do expose our methods on our gatherings and discussions.
TSC is not worried about exposures. If a layman really wants to figure out a trick they can simply browse the net for it. Magic exposure sites have sporadically popped out on the internet and people will find those without much effort. Exposures do either of these two things: satisfy the spectator's curiosity, or inspire them to do magic soon. Besides, letting them in on a trick will not ruin anybody's career in magic. They will most likely forget the methods in a few days anyway just as even magicians forget the methods for their effects. Exposures are like piracy of optical media (movies, EPs, etc.). They will always be there but magic will survive nonetheless.
If you are worried too much about exposing your precious effects to other members (that they'll probably find out soon anyway), then you're probably on the wrong group. TSC is a sharing community. Our library of videos (and affiliations to a number of exposure sites) should say that we have much to share and none to loose.
Projects and Activities
Besides TSC's weekly workgroup sessions, every now and then, an event will call for a performance by chosen TSC members. Such events would likely be birthdays, weddings, debuts, corporate parties, outings, team building seminars, fund raisings, social works, etc. This will help direct our efforts in studying magic to veritable causes and will at the same time serve as training grounds for members.
The weekly workgroup sessions will require members (new and old) to perform a short routine of 2-3 effects to the group. It is not necessary that the routine is perfect. Keep in mind that the members are not here to criticize but merely to help out on handling and performances.
Membership
TSC is open and free for anyone who would like to learn more about magic. However, we still need to be wary of people who are out to merely learn some tricks to fool people or will just join the group to learn a couple of secrets. While TSC is an "open-source" community, there will be further screening to gain official membership. One of the ways to determine a person's intentions in joining is attendance. Please understand that no matter how great you are in the forums, to be fair to everyone, attendance is an important factor for membership. Being an official member will mean you are dedicated to the craft and will most likely earn you respect from other members and you will be their inspiration to pursue magic.
Closing
The rewards in learning magic is something you can carry even after retirement and your legacy will be left with your families for years after we die. If your intentions remain constant - to leave a good feeling to either spectator or fellow magicians, it will not matter how skilled you are with manipulating cards, coins, sponges or ropes, it is your personality that will leave an indelible mark in their mind long after you part ways.
TSC Guidelines as of Aug. 30, 2007
During Gatherings
1) Important: teaching and sharing of effects & methods will no longer be allowed by default to new members, apprentices, or spectator-level members. What this means is that all members are discouraged to teach methodologies and secrets by default unless to a certified TSC member. Please, do not teach methods to apprentices / new members unless you have the permission of the apprentice's mentor. This is to avoid overloading of effects to the apprentices. Remember always that the mentors may have their own program for their apprentices.
2) All first time attendees & spectator-level members will need to be introduced to the committee or at least the gathering organizer. If that first time attendee or spectator-level member attended with a TSC member, that TSC member should take the responsibility of introducing his/her guest to the gathering organizer/committee and to other members as well.
3) All first time attendees & spectator-level members will need to be endorsed to the assigned committee member for orientation into TSC.
4) All first time attendees will need to perform during the gatherings first so we can assess that person's skill level or at least interest level and to avoid too much overloading / exposures later on during the event.
5) Videos - free sharing of videos to non-certified members are discouraged. Please protect your resources well and help to avoid "leeches."
6) Recruitment - avoid recruiting of people with zero knowledge in magic and equally zero interest. We trust your judgment in these cases, however, if you should bring your "recruits" (and if they don't have any magical knowledge) to gatherings, please be responsible to keep your guests away from too many exposures.
7) TSC Friends, Celebrity Guests, Guest Magicians - these are the people who are not members of the TSC Forums but have been joining our gatherings and have been sharing in their talents to the members. Be noted that they will not necessarily be Certified TSC Members.
8) Becoming a Certified TSC Member - there will be no longer individual exams. All members who want to be a Certified TSC Member will need to go through the Level-up Jam gatherings.
Crashing
1) Please, only crash in pairs. This means that crashers per table must be limited to only 2 magicians. A committee will be assigned to regulate the crashing. Keep in mind that our spectators want their private time also.
2) The committees will also regulate the huddling of magicians watching during a crash. It may be annoying and/or intimidating to your spectators seeing a lot of guys ogling around them on their table.
Committee Rotation
1) The TSC Committees will be rotated within a year or as needed be. This means that other TSC members will have the chance to take on the responsibility of being a TSC moderator, organizer & committee.
2) Committee roles will be as follows: Forum Admin, Forum Thread Moderator, Gathering Organizer, Librarian and the TSC Consultant.
Huge thanks to idol Ernest for saving this copy. I can ask the Certified and Committee members if we would still use this or revise this.
