Hello! My name is Rafael Joshua Sarmiento, or "RJ" for short. Im currently residing in Marikina and used to live in San Mateo. I've been interested in magic since I was a kid, but only started practicing the craft when I entered High School. For the most of it, Card magic and Mentalism has always piqued my interest ever since. Love, joy and all kinds of excitement fills me the moment I make people happy or feel amazed with what I can do. Of course that didn't happen overnight; and curiousity got the best of me. I was always fascinated with how the craft works so of course, I tried new ideas. I was even to the point where I got addicted in learning more and more so I try to watch tutorials from youtube about the different kinds of magic and its genres. Of course all beginners like me got lost at one point; and I ended up either learning techiniques that were to advanced for me or just simply forgetting the basics. That didn't stop me from pursuing magic though, so I tried a different approach like searching for nearby magic shops within my area. There was this group of Christian magicians who welcomed me (at Robinson's Metro East ) and were the ones who started to guide me more into magic but unfortunately after a month or two, the shop closed and couldnt contact the magicians there anymore. Of course I didn't stop there. After several attempts at looking for shops which I searched from the internet (most of them have already closed long before) There was this one in greenhills which I still managed to find abd visit called "Abracadabra Magic Shop" in which where I bought my very first thumb tip. The owner was very accommodating and even thought me how to properly use it. I had visited his shop around two or three times, and the owner would gladly give me advice on magic and even stories about him being a magician. I rarely came after that since it was kind of far and I couldnt afford to go more often due to strict school schedules and other personal matters. Two years later while I was studying at University of the East, my girlfriend told me there was an actual magic shop at pureza near our school. She said It was a lot easier to go to than the one before so I tried heading for the directions she gave me after visiting it once.
The new atmosphere got me totally overwhelmed with how many magicians I met during my first visit (compared to the first one I went where I met only a few). The very first magicians I met were Kuya Philip who usually manages the counter, and Kuya Chris Lina. I was asked around if I could do magic so I showed so I showed him a few tricks. Apparently, I had my up a routine that time and I was glad I was able to pull it off. Of course he knew how the trick worked though. It was just a matter of how if I was able to deliver it well or not. Kuya Chris even told me I had a knack for it and i was good. Afterwards, he then showed me some of his favorite magic tricks and invited me to go to their group "TSC" or "The Story Circle". Being the enthusiastic and eager magician I was, I immediately said yes. Following the orientation kuya Chris gave me regarding when and where our first gathering would be, it was at Alimall, starbucks at Cubao. When I got there, I was even more baffled by how many more magicians have attended and how good they were. Though I'd like to attend more after experiencing my first gathering, I ended up not being a regular attendee due to schedule conflicts. Even then, I still made sure I went to the major events like "Coin Jam 2", "Friday the thirteenth" and the very recent 2017 "Kickoff." I was and am still very happy I got invited into The Story Circle because like a second family, they welcomed me guided me more into the magician I am now. I might come off as annoying or "sobrang makulit" to some people especially about magic but it is only because I still have room for improvement and is willing to work hard to be better at this passion and hobby of mine. For me, magic is an easy way to connect people. To share stories. To entertain. But the most important of all? It makes people happy.
