Although more companies are seeking to have a better work environment and better productivity, in Mexico there are still more than 200 thousand workplaces with an unhealthy environment that affects the performance and even the physical well-being of employees.
There are workers who, with their behavior, affect colleagues and in addition to becoming toxic people, they make the workplace toxic.
This toxicity can attract serious consequences such as loss of customers, loss of employee morale, increased turnover, and loss of legitimacy.
According to a Harvard Business Review report , toxicity can attract, at extreme levels, truly critical situations. Among them, resignations of workers - who have no plans to quit their job - since they face every day the situation of living with toxic colleagues that affect their work performance and even their personal life.
According to Alejandro Arévalo, manager of Chile Mobile Number List DNA Human Capital, as a collaborator you cannot contribute to maintaining a toxic environment, but, on the contrary, the best thing “is to try to provide a good attitude to generate change and look for spaces conducive to dispel negativity.”
For Arévalo, "there must be favorable spaces with the company's leaders to have a frank and sincere conversation, where it is possible to make these toxic behaviors known, since they could affect the productivity of the company and its collaborators. While the company changes its culture, it can look for ways to work 'home office' or in secluded rooms to make day-to-day life more bearable, or even propose activities that counteract this toxic environment,” he highlights.
For his part, Jaime Ramírez, director of the Andean area of Mercado Libre, is not about surviving in toxic environments; but to contribute to its transformation by experiencing the experience of improving oneself, growing and feeling proud for proposing new work alternatives and generating healthy, happy and fun environments.
“A good attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit allow people to visualize their work spaces in a different way, and to be able to contribute all their skills.”
Mireya Martínez, vice president of Human Resources at Omnibnk, says that companies must set goals that allow all leaders and people in charge to align to maintain functional and achievement-oriented relationships; through feedback, maintaining a genuine interest in developing collaborators.
Surviving in a toxic office
Ignacio Puig Moreno, co-founder of Acámica, a digital skills academy, believes that there is no magic formula to survive toxic offices.
“We have to ask ourselves what possibility exists to modify the toxicity situation and how easy it is for us to move between jobs. This is important to consider because a toxic environment in itself is harmful and the intuitive thing to do is to get out of there as quickly as possible. However, if it is within our reach to work on that culture, it is our responsibility to modify it and work to improve it, although it is not an easy task that is also necessary and requires time and effort ,” he points out.
What if the toxic one is you?
An easy first step is to start asking people. If everyone starts talking about your difficult behavior, there may be a problem.
Now, to go even deeper than that, you may be unknowingly spreading toxicity and that problem is accentuated if you are the director.
Do people react strangely when you speak in meetings? Don't they look you in the eye? Do they fear you a little and you really don't know why? Maybe it's time to make changes.
